— Description —

Map of South and Central America, from California to Tierra del Fuego. The shading accompanies the ocean currents along the continent and highlights the relief of the Andes mountain range and its volcanoes. Between Peru and Bolivia is a large lake —possibly Titicaca— shown flowing into the Amazon. Published in Amsterdam in 1665 by Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a German Jesuit of encyclopaedic interests; in his Mundus Subterraneus (1665) he proposed a global system of underground rivers and volcanoes, and made one of the first attempts to depict the tides on a map. It shows California, Cuba, the Gulf of Mexico, Hispaniola, New Spain, Peru, Chile, the Río de la Plata, Paraguay, Brazil and Tierra del Fuego, as well as Mexico City. The title and place names are in Latin, with a cartouche.
