This 1,618-page volume (1,369 pp. + Appendix of 249 pp.) contains diplomatic and military correspondence, records of the occupation and various military reports. It details the campaign that culminated with the occupation of Mexico City on 14 September 1847. The book begins with the transcription of the speech delivered by James K. Polk before Congress in December 1847. The 11th president of the United States declares that Mexico was “the acknowledged debtor, and the aggressor herself in the war”. He adds that the United States will consent to peace, provided that Mexico accepts “a suitable cession of territory” as well as the payment of its “considerable amount of debt”.
