— Description —

Original antique print depicting a partial view of the port and city of Mahón, on the island of Menorca, created by Font and Vallejo and published in Madrid around 1860. The image shows the layout of Mahón’s natural harbour, one of the deepest and most sheltered in the Mediterranean, with the town positioned on the heights at the southern entrance. The main buildings of the settlement, the coastline, and vessels anchored in the harbour waters are visible. During the 18th century Mahón was disputed among the British, French and Spanish crowns, passing definitively to Spanish sovereignty in 1802 following the Treaty of Amiens. The port has historically served as a naval base due to its strategic position in the western Mediterranean. Font and Vallejo were engravers active in Madrid in the mid-19th century who worked on various illustrated publications of geography and history. The work is a litography.
