— Description —

Original antique view of Tuy from the ramparts of Valença, drawn by George Vivian and published in London in 1839. The image shows the town of Tuy, located on the Spanish bank of the river Minho, as seen from the Portuguese side, specifically from the fortifications of Valença do Minho. The foreground features the walls and defenses of Valença, while in the background the profile of Tuy can be seen with its cathedral and main buildings across the river. The Minho marks the natural border between Spain and Portugal at this point. This view belongs to the album “Scenery of Portugal and Spain”, a series of lithographs that Vivian produced following his travels through the Iberian Peninsula during the 1830s. George Vivian was a British artist active in the first half of the 19th century, known for his landscape views of European sites. The work is a lithograph, a printing technique that faithfully reproduces the strokes of the original drawing.
