— Description —

Scarce plan of Cádiz and its bay, published in Paris around 1715. This is the first edition of this map, focused on the fortifications of the Atlantic port. The city is described in the lower right cartouche, and thanks to its location and its fortifications, it became “one of the best fortified strongholds in Spain and even in Europe”. An analysis of the city’s defensive system suggests that the plan was drawn up in 1709 or 1710, during the War of the Spanish Succession. Later editions of this map, which would be published until the 1760s, detail the centre of the city and add a key beneath the title.
