— Description —
Large-format map covering the present-day territories of Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary, with the course of the Danube. Issued in Paris in 1695 by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, after an original by Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), founder of the French school of cartography. The title cartouche alludes to the victory over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Vienna, with a double-headed eagle, four putti and two Turkish prisoners at the bottom. On Sanson’s death, in 1667, his son Guillaume continued the business in partnership with Jaillot.
