— Description —

Original antique map of Spain and Portugal, engraved by Alexandre Vuillemin and published in Paris around 1850. The map depicts the whole of the Iberian Peninsula with its provincial divisions. In the side borders are two series of 11 engravings accompanied by text, illustrating the characteristics of each province of Spain and Portugal. The text names the principal cities of each province, indicates its population and area, and notes its main agricultural, mining and manufacturing products. This type of illustrated map was common in mid-19th-century French geographical publications, when statistical and economic knowledge of European territories was being spread among the educated public. Alexandre Vuillemin was a French geographer and cartographer active in Paris during the second half of the 19th century, known for his atlases and illustrated maps intended for teaching and the general public. Steel engraving.
