— Description —

Original antique map of the Chinese coast between Wenzhou and the Jiushan Islands, including Shipu Harbor, published by the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office in London in 1939 and corrected in 1955. This nautical chart covers a section of the coastline of Zhejiang Province, on the East China Sea, detailing Wenzhou (Wen Chow Yang in the toponymy of the period), the Jiushan archipelago (Kueshan Islands), Shipu port, and numerous coastal islands and islets. Bathymetric soundings, expressed in fathoms, indicate water depth to assist ship navigation. During the first half of the 20th century, this maritime stretch was strategic for Chinese coastal trade and military routes in the western Pacific. The British Admiralty Hydrographic Office, established in 1795, was the British naval cartographic office responsible for producing and updating hydrographic charts for the Royal Navy and merchant fleet. The chart was produced using copper engraving and typographic printing.
