Madrid

Original antique map of Madrid, engraved by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.) and published in London in 1831. This plan shows the complete city with the names of the streets and squares of the Spanish capital. The cartography identifies the neighborhoods, main roads and public spaces of Madrid at the beginning of the 19th century. At the bottom appear the facades of the most prominent buildings and monuments of the city: the Escorial Palace, the Royal Palace and the Puerta de Alcalá. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was a British organization founded in 1826 that published maps, atlases and educational texts at affordable prices to spread geographical and historical knowledge. The society produced numerous urban maps of European cities during the 1830s and 1840s. Copper engraving.
