Tarraconensis Episcopatus

Original antique map of the bishopric of Tarazona, engraved by Joan Blaeu and published in Amsterdam in 1640. This map depicts the ecclesiastical territory of the diocese of Tarazona, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, covering part of present-day Aragon. The area shown includes the city of Tarazona and the lands under the jurisdiction of the bishopric, which extended from the Ribera Navarra towards Calatayud, passing through Soria. During the seventeenth century, Tarazona was the seat of one of the oldest dioceses in Spain. The map includes a decorative cartouche for the title flanked by four cherubs and a similar one for the scale. Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher, son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu, who ran the family workshop in Amsterdam and published numerous atlases, including the monumental Atlas Maior. This map is part of his cartographic production dedicated to European territories. Copper engraving.
