— Description —

Original antique map of the fortress of Saint Philip in Mahón, on the island of Menorca, engraved by Homann and published in Nuremberg in 1756. The plan shows in detail the fortress of Saint Philip, located at the entrance to the port of Mahón, with its walls, bastions and defensive structures. The port of Mahón and the adjacent coastal areas are also represented. This map was published during a period of intense military dispute over the control of Menorca, which changed hands between the British, French and Spanish throughout the eighteenth century. In 1756, the year this plan was published, the fortress was besieged and captured by French troops under the Duke of Richelieu, in the context of the Seven Years’ War. The Homann family was one of the leading map and atlas publishing houses in Germany during the eighteenth century, founded by Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg. This is a copper engraving.
