Original antique map of the Philippine Islands, the Mariana Islands (called Ladrones), the Moluccas or Spice Islands, and Celebes, engraved by Isaak Tirion and published in Amsterdam in 1740. The map covers a vast territory of Southeast Asia and includes the Philippines with Manila, the Mariana Islands, the Moluccas archipelago (Ternate, Tidore, Ambon), Celebes (present-day Sulawesi), Borneo, Java, Sumatra, the coasts of Siam, Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as southern China and Formosa (present-day Taiwan). This map was published during a period of intense European commercial competition for control of the spice trade, when Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese powers disputed dominance over these maritime routes. Isaak Tirion (1705-1769) was a Dutch publisher, engraver and cartographer active in Amsterdam, known for his atlases and maps aimed at the educated public of his time. It is a copper engraving.
