— Description —

Original antique map of Egypt, engraved by John Cary and published in London in 1805. The map depicts Egyptian territory with its main cities, the course of the Nile River, and overland routes. It includes an enlarged map of the Nile Delta showing in greater detail the river mouth and the settlements of the delta region. The copy is hand-colored, meaning it was colored manually after printing, a common practice to highlight administrative divisions and improve readability. It was published during the period when Egypt, following Napoleon’s expedition of 1798-1801, aroused renewed geographical and scientific interest in Europe. John Cary (c.1754-1835) was a British cartographer and publisher based in London, known for his atlases and geographical maps aimed at the general public. Steel engraving, a technique that allowed longer print runs than copper.
