Original antique map of the coast of Portugal, published by the Dépôt Général de la Marine in Paris in 1816. This nautical chart covers the entire Portuguese coastline, from the mouth of the Minho River on the border with Galicia to Cape Saint Vincent in the Algarve, including port cities such as Porto, Lisbon, Setúbal, Peniche, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, Sesimbra, Sines, and Lagos. The map also shows the Tagus estuary, the Douro estuary, Cape Roca, Cape Carvoeiro, Cape Espichel, and the Berlengas Islands. In 1816, Portugal was in a period of reconstruction following the Napoleonic Wars, which had devastated the country between 1807 and 1814, and the Portuguese royal court remained in Brazil. The Dépôt Général de la Marine was the official cartographic agency of the French navy, established in 1720 to produce nautical charts for military and commercial navigation.
