— Description —

Original antique map of the coast of Asturias, drawn by Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel and published in Madrid in 1860. The spherical chart covers the Asturian coastline from the Watchtower of Santa Justa to Punta Berroco, accurately representing the coastal profile of this region in northern Spain. The map shows the geographical features, ports and reference points necessary for maritime navigation along this coast of the Cantabrian Sea. Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel was a prominent Spanish naval officer and cartographer of the 18th century who directed the work on the Maritime Atlas of Spain, a fundamental work for navigation along Spanish coasts. His nautical charts continued to be republished during the 19th century due to their practical utility. This chart was published in 1860, decades after the author’s death, as part of the ongoing update of Spanish navigation charts. The document is made using copper engraving, a technique used for reproducing maritime charts that allowed the necessary precision in this type of nautical representation.
