Castiliae Veteris et novae descriptio

Original antique map of Old Castile and New Castile, engraved by Henricus Hondius and published in Amsterdam in 1636. The map depicts the territory of the two Castiles, showing the main cities, rivers, and territorial divisions of these regions in central Spain. Old Castile covered the northern areas, while New Castile encompassed the central lands of the peninsula, including the capital Madrid. During the seventeenth century, these territories formed the political and administrative heart of the Spanish monarchy under the reign of Philip IV. Henricus Hondius was a Dutch cartographer and publisher born in 1597 in Amsterdam, son of the renowned cartographer Jodocus Hondius. He continued the family business and published numerous atlases and maps of European geography. Copper engraving.
