Original antique map of South America prepared by Didier Robert de Vaugondy and published in Paris around 1790. The map represents the entire South American continent, from the Isthmus of Panama to Cape Horn, including the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. It shows the main Spanish, Portuguese and other European colonial territories. The map identifies viceroyalties, captaincies general, audiencias and governorships, as well as major cities, rivers and mountain ranges. The map displays the Amazon River, the Río de la Plata, the Andes mountain range, Lake Titicaca and the regions of Brazil, Peru, Chile, Río de la Plata, New Granada and Guyana. The title states that the map is based on the most recent accounts and astronomical observations, reflecting the geographical knowledge of the late eighteenth century. Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786) was royal geographer in France and member of a family of cartographers. His maps are known for their accuracy and for incorporating the most current data of his time. Copper engraving.
