Original antique map of Africa, engraved by Jean Palairet and published in London in 1754. The map depicts the African continent as a whole, showing its coastlines, main regions and territorial divisions known at the time. This copy is hand-colored, with colors applied manually over the original engraving to highlight the different territories. The cartography of Africa in the mid-eighteenth century reflected European knowledge of the continent, with greater accuracy in coastal areas and less detail in interior regions still little explored. Jean Palairet was a French geographer and cartographer active in London during the eighteenth century, author of various atlases and maps that contributed to the dissemination of geographical knowledge in Europe. The technique used is copper engraving.
