[Map of South America] Typus Geographicus Chili, Paraguay Freti Magellanici & c.

Detailed and very decorative antique map of South America covering the present-day territories of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and the southern part of Bolivia and Brazil, as well as the Río de la Plata, Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. The profuse information it contains is a testimony of the incredible detail that characterised 18th-century engraving in Germany. It includes an inset plan of the city of Santiago, made, according to the title cartouche, by Amédée François Frézier, a French military engineer, mathematician and explorer who travelled to South America in 1712 and toured mainly the Pacific coasts, of Chile and Peru. He travelled along the coasts of Brazil and the Strait of Magellan and his observations were gathered in the work Relación de viaje a las costas de Chile y Perú (1716). This original map is based on the work of Guillaume Delisle and was published in Nuremberg by the heirs of Homann, a publishing house created after the death of Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724), German engraver and cartographer who held the title of Imperial Geographer of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI.
