Detailed original map of the island of Martinique, first published by Guillaume Delisle. It contains abundant information regarding the settlements, the plantations, the roads, the ports, the mills, etc. Elements indicated in a key and which give an account of the prosperity of the island. The orography and the wooded areas are represented pictographically. This antique map also features three compass roses and navigation lines. Philippe Buache (1700-1773) was one of the most famous cartographers of the 18th century. He was the son-in-law of the notable Guillaume Delisle and took charge of the family business on the death of his father-in-law. He received the title of Geographer to the King in 1729 and was elected to the Académie des Sciences the same year. He was a pioneering theoretical geographer, especially as regards contour lines and hydrographic basins. His best-known work was Considérations géographiques et physiques sur les découvertes nouvelles dans la grande mer (Paris, 1754).
