Detailed and uncommon original map of the island of Jamaica. It is the French edition made by George Louis Le Rouge of the English map by Thomas Jefferys of 1775. It includes abundant information on parishes, towns, cities, forts, roads, rivers, lakes, ports and anchorages. One can also appreciate the presence of depth soundings along the southern coast of the island. Two inset maps represent the ports of Bluefields, Port Royal and Kingston, and above the title is a compass rose. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most important English cartographers of the 18th century. From around 1750, he began to publish maps of the Americas, which were among the most produced in the period. He was named cartographer to the Prince of Wales and later to the King. He engraved and printed for the government and other official bodies and produced a great variety of commercial maps and atlases, especially of North America.
