— Description —

Map of the province of Burgos, part of the Atlas Geográfico de España by Tomás López, published in 1804 but dated 1784. The region of Burgos lies adjacent to the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid to the west, and to the provinces of Soria and Segovia to the south. This map reveals López’s dedication—a disciple of the French cartographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon D’Anville and director of the Geographic Office of the First Secretariat of State and of the Universal Office from 1795—to mapping the entire Iberian Peninsula independently of foreign influence. For the creation of these maps, López sent questionnaires to the local parish priests requesting drawings of the area. His methodology, known as “armchair geography”, consisted of comparing and compiling existing maps of the territory, not of creating them himself from scratch.
