Antique engraving containing a map of the north-west coast of South America and covering from Panama to the far north of Chile including the present-day territories of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. On the sides of this map, a pair of engravings represent elements of the flora and fauna of the region, tools and machinery, and the clothing of the Spaniards who live there. Below, a plan of the city of Lima with its grid layout and its system of walls. They are accompanied by an explanatory text in French. This original engraving was published in the Atlas Historique by Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743). Chatelain was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origin. He was a successful businessman who created networks in London, The Hague and Amsterdam. His most notable work was the Atlas Historique, published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720. This monumental work focused on the history and genealogy of the continents, addressing subjects such as geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography. The maps included were made by Chatelain and were based on the work of Guillaume Delisle.
