— Description —

Coloured map of northern Ecuador, extending from the province of Cotopaxi, in the south, to Barbacoas (Colombia), in the north. Published in Paris in 1764 by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), cartographer and hydrographer of the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. It identifies the towns of Quito, Otavalo, Esmeraldas, Archidona and Ibarra (labelled ‘la villa de Ibarra’). Natural features include the Cotopaxi volcano, the Andes mountain range and the Esmeraldas and Mira rivers. The title and scale occupy the upper left corner, within a single cartouche. The map marks the equator and the Quito meridian.
