— Description —

Coloured map of northern Chile, from the island of Chiloé to Atacama, showing Chilean territory a year before the War of Independence. Published in London in 1809 by John Pinkerton (1758-1826), a Scottish geographer and cartographer, author of the Modern Atlas (1808-1815). It identifies the towns of Chacao, Calbuco, Valdivia, Concepción, San Fernando, Santiago, Quillota and La Serena. In the centre-left it includes a small map of the Juan Fernández archipelago, in the Pacific, more than 670 km from the mainland. The relief is shown by shading, with the Andes mountain range emphasised.
