Plan de l’Ile et de la rade d’Iquique / Plan de la Baie de Coquimbo

On this sheet we find two plans, one of “Iquique Island” and another of the bay of Coquimbo in Chile. This sheet was published by the “Dépôt Générale de la Marine” in the year 1836 in Paris and was engraved by Ambroise Tardieu and lettered by J. M. Hacq. In the left part of the sheet we find the plan of “Iquique Island”, which mentions Serrano Island, which is today joined by asphalt and road to the city of Iquique. This city can also be seen represented in its beginnings on the map, for we see 5 houses that show us the initial location before its expansion and official founding in the year 1866. In addition, around the island and along the gulf that we can see to the north of the city, we see various nautical indications. On the other hand, we find the plan of the bay of Coquimbo where we can see this bay as well as its gulf to the north. Worth noting is the appearance of nautical references in this bay as well as in the southern area of the gulf. To the right of the map we can see a small town of 8 houses whose name is “Serena” or “Coquimbo”. This town is today the city of Serena, since Coquimbo lies in the area further to the south between the bay of La Herradura de Guayacán and the great gulf.
