Map comprising the Kingdoms of Castilla la Nueva, Castilla la Vieja and Extremadura, with Madrid in the centre; made by Visscher and published by Petrus Schenk, Jr. In the upper left corner are the title and the scales, in a cartouche decorated with warlike motifs and garlands of flowers and fruits. Below is the key of symbols indicating bishopric, archbishopric, fortified city, university, etc. It covers from Palencia, Burgos and Balaguer to the north, to Murcia and Badajoz to the south; and from the border with Portugal to the Mediterranean and Tarragona. Other details include: graduated margins, presence of parallels and meridians forming a grid, orography in profile, hydrographic and road network, abundant toponymy in Spanish and French, political division of kingdoms, etc. The cities are indicated with different symbology according to their size and importance. Nicolaes Visscher I (1618-1679) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher, established in Amsterdam. He was the son of Claes Janszoon Visscher. Large size, including the eastern part of the map (Aragon and Catalonia), which is usually lacking.
