— Description —

Scarce view of the centre of Madrid, which includes a numbered key (1-17) in Spanish and French in the lower part. Published by Étienne Charpentier (1707-1792). Engraved by Aveline and first published in 1692 by Crepy. Here is the rare reissue by Charpentier, a Parisian engraver, publisher and print dealer. He would end up selling his stock to his son-in-law, Jacques Simon Chéreau, who would publish this engraving again in the 1760s. With “à Paris chés Charpentier, rue St. Jacques au Coq”. The National Library of Spain, which has a similar example (in colour and in very poor condition, with losses), dates it to 1736. Full title: Madrid Villa Capital del Reyno D’Espana y Real Corte De Los Reyes Católicos, vista de La puente de Sogovia [sic] Madrid Ville Capitale du Royaume d’Espagne, résidence des Rois Catholiques, veue du côté du Pont de Ségovie. In the upper part the name of the city on a banderole: “MADRID”.
