— Description —

Original antique lithograph of the gateway of the Santa Cruz hospital in Toledo, work of the Spanish painter and lithographer Genaro Pérez de Villa-Amil, published in Paris in 1842. The image shows the main facade of this Renaissance building, constructed between 1504 and 1515 by order of Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza. The gateway is flanked by columns and features rich sculptural decoration with heraldic motifs. The Santa Cruz hospital was founded to care for foundlings and the sick, and is one of the finest examples of Toledan Plateresque architecture. Genaro Pérez de Villa-Amil (1798-1870) was one of the leading Spanish Romantic artists, specialized in views of monuments and landscapes. This lithograph was part of the series España artística y monumental, published in Paris between 1842 and 1850, which compiled views of Spain’s main historical buildings. The lithographic technique allowed detailed reproduction of architectural and ornamental elements.
