Le Royaume De Galice

Scarce and detailed map of Galicia, made in the distinctive style of Nicolas de Fer. It places special emphasis on the topography of the region, with the mountains represented in profile. The location of A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Lugo stands out, as well as the borders with Asturias, León and Portugal. It includes a cartouche with a coat of arms and compass rose. Although made by De Fer, this example was published by Louis-Charles Desnos, successor of De Fer. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific engraver, cartographer and publisher established in Paris, who earned a solid reputation for the considerable ornamental appeal of his maps. He was the son of a Parisian printer and map seller, Antoine de Fer, and one of the most influential French cartographers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He had the honour of being named Géographe du Dauphin, an investiture that allowed him unprecedented access to the most up-to-date cartographic information. Hand-coloured, it is unusual to find this map on the market.
