— Description —

Detailed and scarce antique map of Greece and surrounding territories. It covers part of Turkey, the Balkans, the island of Crete and even the easternmost tip of Italy. A key indicates the geographical coordinates of important cities such as Constantinople, Candia in Crete, Rhodes, Smyrna, among others. It presents hand-applied colour delineation, a title cartouche with a crescent moon, a turban and a scimitar, and a compass rose. This original map was made by Nicolas de Fer, a prolific engraver, cartographer and publisher established in Paris, who earned a solid reputation for the considerable ornamental appeal of his maps. He was the son of a Parisian printer and map seller, Antoine de Fer, and one of the most influential French cartographers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He had the honour of being named Géographe du Dauphin, an investiture that allowed him unprecedented access to the most up-to-date cartographic information.
