— Description —

Coloured map of the south of South America, corresponding to the present-day territories of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay. Specifically observed is the former territory of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, Chile and Patagonia, as well as Uruguay, Paraguay and the south of Bolivia and Brazil. Published in Paris in 1838 by Pierre Lapie (1777-1850), a renowned cartographer and colonel of the General Staff of the Army of France, this map presents a decorative frame. The title is located in the lower left part and the scale in the right part. Worth noting is the representation of Patagonia as a territory independent of Chile and Argentina. In addition, Bolivia’s access to the sea is shown, a territory that would come to form part of Chile a few years later.
