— Description —

This map was produced by Camillo Vacani, a marshal of the Austrian army, writer and diplomat, who documented the history of the campaigns and sieges of the Italians during the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). This detailed military plan of the city of Tortosa and its surroundings shows the siege and capture of the city by the Napoleonic troops, led by Marshal Suchet, in December 1810, in their effort to control the lower Ebro and the communications between Catalonia and Valencia.
The plan meticulously represents both the urban fabric and the relief by means of concentric contour lines (an advanced technique for the period), clearly showing the artillery positions, trenches, batteries, access roads and strategic points used by the French and Italian forces in the capture of the city.
