— Description —

Booklet containing two maps of Lausanne, Switzerland, both published by Spengler for the department store “Bazar Vaudois”. These maps are extremely rare, with a single entry each in WorldCat (both at the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire de Lausanne) and no reference in Rarebookhub. The first map, dated 1856, focuses on the city, while the second shows the city and its surroundings, from Lake Geneva and Ouchy/Pully to the south to Bosson and the castle of Vennes to the north. This booklet illustrates the capital of the canton of Vaud during its transformation, passing from a mainly rural economy, with some manual workshops, to an industrial centre. The first map shows the gas factory, built in 1844; the city would later host the first power station in Switzerland in 1882. This economic dynamism led to a demographic expansion, which explains why the Bazar Vaudois considered it necessary to publish a new map of Lausanne and its surroundings barely ten years after the first map of the city of Lausanne alone. The maps are also contemporary with the beginnings of tourism in the country, since the tour operator Thomas Cook launched the first all-inclusive trips for British clients in 1858.
