This rare original antique view provides a rare perspective of the Singapore River looking upstream from South Boat Quay. Captured in August 1830 during Captain Laplace’s French scientific expedition, the image features the historic Jackson’s Bridge, the first wooden structure built in 1823 to connect North and South Bridge Roads and provide access to Chinatown. The drawing accurately depicts the bridge’s central lift section, designed to allow vessels to navigate further inland.
The scene also highlights the early urban development of Singapore, showing the fortified quays of the south bank and, in the distance, the Governor’s House atop Government Hill (now Fort Canning Hill) with its distinctive flagstaff. Created by the future Admiral François-Edmond Pâris and engraved in aquatint by Sigismond Himely, this original antique print is a fundamental document for understanding the colonial architecture and maritime atmosphere of the island during its first decade as a British trading post.
