[Including 16 Mexican-American War Maps] Message from the President of the United States [Incluyendo 16 mapas de la Intervención estadounidense en México]
[Mapas de la intervención norteamericana en México] 8vo. (233 x 152 mm). Light spotting and some browning throughout; one table and one map detached. Sixteen folded lithographed maps, including those of the major California and New Mexico battles; five folding tables. Contemporary half deer, marbled paper boards. This 1,618-page volume (1369 pp + Appendix 249 pp) contains diplomatic and military correspondence, occupation records, and several military reports. It details the campaign that culminated with the occupation of Mexico City on September 14, 1847. The book begins with a transcription of the speech given by James K. Polk to Congress in December 1847. The 11th president of the United States declares that Mexico was "the acknowledged debtor, and herself the aggressor in the war." He adds that the United States will consent to peace, provided Mexico agrees to "an adequate cession of territory" as well as a payment of its "heavy amount of indebtedness." With 5 folded tables and 16 folded maps. WordCat lists this book as containing 16 maps and 5 tables. It seems that 18 maps were printed for that publication altogether, and that it was commonly issued with 13 to 17 maps. Our copy contains the following: --- "Plan of the Battle of Buena-Vista", --- "Survey of the Mexican Lines of Defence at Cerro Gordo", --- "Battles of Mexico. Line of Operations of the U.S. Army Under the Command of Major General Winfield Scott On the 19th and 20th of August 1847", "Map of Genl.
