[Eary map of the United States] Carte générale des Treize, Etats-Unis indépendants de l'Amérique septentrionale, 1785
51,5 x 50 cm. An end-of-the-American Revolutionary War era map of the nascent United States and its thirteen colonies engraved by Amsterdamer Hendrik Klockhoff and published in Joseph Mandrillon's Le Spectateur Americain. This map is one of the earliest Revolutionary War Era maps to recognize the newly formed United States. The map displays the eastern coastline of North America from northern Florida near St. Augustine to Massachussets Bay (now northern Maine). It stretches west beyond the Appalachian Mountains to encompass much of the Ohio River Valley, the Saint-Laurent River system that flows into Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The map's title is enclosed in an elegant cartouche in the lower right-hand corner, and scales are displayed in the upper left-hand corner. Relief features shown pictorially.
