— Description —

Original antique engraving depicting the portrait of D. Mariano Zerezo, a farmer from Zaragoza and the parish of San Pablo, created by Fernando Brambila and Juan Gálvez and published in Cádiz in 1814. The print shows one of the defenders of Zaragoza during the Sieges of the city, who died after the entry of French troops during the second siege.

The Sieges of Zaragoza took place during the Spanish War of Independence, between 1808 and 1809, when Napoleonic troops attacked the city twice. The resistance of the inhabitants of Zaragoza, including soldiers and civilians like Mariano Zerezo, became a symbol of the struggle against French occupation. The second siege, particularly bloody, ended with the surrender of the city in February 1809 after months of fighting.

Fernando Brambila was a painter and draftsman active in Spain in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, known for his views and portraits. Juan Gálvez worked as an engraver during the same period. The work is a copper engraving.
