— Description —

Antique map of South America published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in the Mercurio Geografico overo Guida Geografica in tutte le tavole geografiche del Sansone Baudrand e Cantelli, or Geographical Mercury or Geographical Guide to all parts of the World in accordance with the Geographical Tables of Sanson, Baudrand and Cantelli. It presents original hand-applied colours and a title cartouche. The high-quality engraving is evident in the representation of the Andes range and in the ornamental elements of the title. The presence of Lake Parime and the city of Manoa stands out, associated with the myth of El Dorado and which the conquistadors sought without success for centuries. It indicates cities such as Cartagena, Lima, Quito, Santiago, Cusco, among others. This original map was made in one of the most prestigious workshops of Rome based on information from the French geographer Guillaume de Sanson.
