— Description —

Chart of magnetic declinations and inclinations placing the Society Islands in relation to South America, with nautical indications around them. Published in Paris in 1788 from the work of Jean-François de Galaup, Count of La Pérouse —a navigator who led the circumnavigation expedition of 1785-1788, lost in the Pacific and found years later at Vanikoro— and of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, a naturalist and author of the Histoire naturelle. On the right is the Pacific coast of South America, from the Gulf of Guayaquil to Tierra del Fuego. A central text mentions an island discovered by the Spanish in 1773, between present-day French Polynesia and the Pitcairn Islands. The title is in the lower left corner.
