Map of the routes of the ships L’Astrolabe and La Zélée in the southern regions, with a detailed map of the Torres Strait. Published in Paris in 1843 by Clément A. Vincendon Dumoulin (1811-1858), a French hydrographic engineer who took part in Dumont d’Urville’s expedition to Antarctica (1837-1840); the maps appear in the Voyage au pôle sud et dans l’Océanie. The Torres Strait separates Australia —labelled with its former European name ‘Nouvelle Hollande’— from New Guinea. It details its islands, among them ‘Banks’ and ‘Mulgrave’ (now Moa and Badu) and Prince of Wales Island, as well as the main reefs. It includes the soundings in metres taken during the expedition. In the lower right corner it adds a map of the ‘Canal de Mauvais’, east of ‘Ille Toud’ (present-day Tudu Island).
