Uncommon Edition of Homann's Map of America -- Colored By Religious Groups This is an excellent copy of the second state of Homanns map of the Americas, which restores California to its peninsular form. The decorative cartouche includes an allegorical encounter between armed natives and Europeans, with two figures symbolizing North and South American natives carefully observing the scene. The most noteworthy features of this edition of the map are the coloration and the addition of a color key at the bottom right, reflecting the religious groups in North America: Roman Catholic, Evangelical Reformist, and Pagan (Indians). In North America, the Spanish and French colonies are marked as Catholic (Mexico, Florida, and Louisiana), whereas the Eastern Colonies and most of the Canadian coast are shown as Protestant. In a large territory in the center of what is today the United States, and a vast area spanning from Northern California to Labrador, the main religion is depicted as "pagan," corresponding to still unconquered native territories. In Central and South America, the Amazon and the Southern Cone, which were largely unknown to the Spanish and Portuguese crowns, are colored as "pagan," whereas the rest is colored as "Catholic." Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida, as well as most of the West Indies, are also shown as Catholic, apart from Jamaica, the northern coast of Brazil up to Guyana, and several Dutch and British small islands, which are depicted as Protestant. Besides that, the map offers good geographical detail throughout, especially in the southwest and near the Great Lakes, areas that were actively being explored by French fur traders and the Hudson's Bay Company at that time.Antique original map of North and South America.
