52 x 63 cm. Rare color map of Cambodia, probably published in Phnom Penh in 1961 by the Geographical Service of the kingdom. This 1:1,000,000 scale map shows the different provinces of the country, eight years after its independence (1953). Published in French, the language of the former colonial power, the map provides information on the boundaries of the provinces, the location of provincial capitals and "Srok" (districts), phum (villages), as well as the layout of national, provincial, and "terraced" roads and trails, the railway, and the main watercourses. The map is complemented by the location of airfields and hotels. A distance table indicates the mileage between Phnom Penh and various important cities, both national and regional (240 km from Saigon, 734 km from Bangkok). Finally, the country's population is officially 5,748,842 inhabitants (around 18 million currently). This map was published during the Sangkum era, named after the political organization created by Prince Norodom Sihanouk, during which he held power from 1955 to 1970. The logo of the Geographical Service is visible in the top left corner of the map; it is likely the same institution as the Geographical Service of the F.A.R.K. (Royal Khmer Armed Forces). La carte est complétée par l'emplacement des terrains d'aviation et des hôtels.
