Oceanica o quinta parte del mondo [Map of Oceania, Austrialia]
Rare and little-known Italian wall map of Oceania. It was published by Stanislao Stucchi in 1823 ("Stucchi disegno ed incise in Milano 1823") in his "Grande atlante universale di geografia moderna." The "Grande atlante" is an enlarged version of the "Géographie Universelle" by the French-Danish geographer Conrad Malte-Brun. Its title is especially interesting, as it is one of the first (and few) maps to name the "continent" Oceania. Stucchi used the term that had been recently coined by Malte-Brun, "Terres Océaniques" or "Océanique", translated by Stucchi to Oceanica. In 1814, however, Adrien-Hubert Brué coined a new variation: Oceania, which quickly took over Oceanica and (its British counterpart promoted by Arrowsmith) Australasia. Excellent condition.
