[Carta de Rio de Janeiro, Brasil] Plan de la baie de Rio de Janeiro
An elaborate map of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, designed by M. Barral, naval vessel lieutenant under the command of the rear-admiral M. le Baron Hyde de Neuville, and engraved by Jean Francois Caplin. The original map from 1826-1827 was redone with various additional corrections in 1843, 1851, 1866, 1868, and 1869. This is the first map to offer a comprehensive survey of the Bay of Rio. Previous attempts before 1826 were inconclusive due to the methods used. This 1829 edition originates from M. Barrals voyage on the frigate Marie-Therese and his subsequent survey of Guanabara Bay. This detailed map of the bay of Rio de Janeiro is replete with place names, water depths, elevations such as the famed Corcovado among others, lakes, capes, points and beaches, a representation of the city of Rio de Janeiro and further south, Raza Island and its lighthouse in yellow. A table includes conversions of brasses into metres, comments, and a scale display on the left-hand-side edges; additional comments are shown at the bottom on the right-hand side of the map. Shaded relief features are shown, and sounding measurements are noted. The Depot General de la Marine stamp is in the bottom left corner of the map.
